What can I do to start an Ultimate team in my school?

Find out the rules at your school - Each school may have different policies on forming new sports teams. Ask your principal or physical education teacher what is involved in starting a new sports team at your school.

Let the NLUA know you are forming a team - They can assist you in finding other teams to play against and will get you information on upcoming tournaments.

Publicize - Let people know that you are starting a team. Put posters around your school and articles in the school newspaper. Tell your friends and get them to tell their friends.

Find an adult sponsor - A teacher at the school will help your team gain legitimacy and will give you a voice with the administration, as well as provide stability for a program where the participants graduate.

Find a coach - Check your local Ultimate organization or leagues (NLUA, MZU and SWURL). There are many experienced adult players in the St. John's metro area that may be willing to help out a school team.

Show videos - A great way to get students excited about playing is to show them videos of high level Ultimate. Schedule a get-together at lunch or after school and show some Ultimate footage. Contact your local Ultimate organization for great videos and other products.

Schedule practices - Find a time where a lot of people can come out. It is important for your early practices to have a good turnout.

Schedule a game - Invite another team to your school for an Ultimate game. Don't forget to promote the event and try to get a large turnout of players and fans. Once students play against another team, many are hooked.

Attend a tournament - The NLUA facilitates youth tournaments, or you can organize your own. Playing at a tournament is a great experience both athletically and socially.

Recruit, Recruit, Recruit - You can never have too many people who want to play Ultimate.

Pass on the team - When you are moving on, find a motivated, knowledgeable, returning player to lead the team in the future.
